The Sports and Recreation Alliance is appealing to all fans and participants of community sports to help safeguard the country’s open spaces in the face of government changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

The draft NPPF, which is currently open to consultation, seeks to simplify existing guidance with the aim of stimulation economic growth, and applies to most planning decisions at local and neighbourhood level.

Port out starboard home

Forget your lefts and rights, British Rowing can officially confirm that ‘port’ and ‘starboard’ are the terms to use when rowing!

The debate has raged long and hard as to whether port and starboard should be the accepted terminology across the sport of rowing, but we can finally confirm that British Rowing will be adopting the terms across our official publications.

British Rowing to clarify lightweight rules

Junior rowers should not be permitted to compete in lightweight competitions, according to the British Rowing Medical Sub-Committee.

The Committee, chaired by Dr Richard Budgett – British Rowing’s Honorary Medical Advisor and Chief Medical Officer for the London 2012 Olympic Games – has agreed that ‘excessive weight loss, fasting, or calorie-controlled diets could have a serious affect on the growth and maturation of young people.’

Nominate your Sports Parliamentarian of the Year

The Sports and Recreation Alliance are looking for the MP or Member of the House of Lords that most deserves recognition ‘for their efforts to promote and protect the interests of sport and recreation in 2011.’

If you or your club has benefitted from a particularly passionate MP, or if you think that a member of either house deserves to be singled out for championing a particular sporting campaign, then the SRA wants to hear from you.

Nominate an Olympic torch-bearer

Lloyds TSB is searching for people who have made a difference in the rowing community to help carry the Olympic Flame in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

The 2012 Torch Relay begins at Land’s End on 19 May 2012, before travelling thousands of miles across the UK to bring the spirit of sport and the Olympics to communities around the country.

Sad news of the death of H Wilf Mellor

It is with great sadness that York City Rowing Club has announced the death of their Past President, Wilf Mellor, aged 86 years.  The club has asked British Rowing to publish the funeral details for his many friends in rowing -

The funeral will take place on Friday 8th July at Fulford Parish Chuch in York at 1.30 pm.  The service will be followed by an interment in Fulford Cemetery after which there will be refreshments at the Pavilion Hotel, Fulford, York.
