Club Development

York City Rowing Club believes that it can build for the future, grow and succeed by working within British Rowing towards the following key objectives:

  • Creating participants through developing new partnerships & activities
  • Support the principle of rowing for life through a well-resourced club
  • High achieving competitors inspire emulation.
  • Improved partnership with Active York

The Club is starting from a high level of success in many areas, not least the winning of our first ever Henley Regatta wins for both Men and Women. This is in addition to a very successful Junior section both in terms of numbers taking part and number of wins, some at National Championship level.
Support for charitable & community services has continued to grow and the Club expects to extend such partnerships.
At present there is a problem of capacity to house the activities on land. In addition, rowing activities at all levels are constrained by the availability of volunteers and coaches. The plan is to address these by modernising and extending the boathouse. Better facilities are expected to encourage more volunteers and coaches.
Further development then will depend on our ability to bring our premises up to a modern standard. The fifty year old facilities are not as welcoming as they need to be. Since all our maintenance and operation is carried out by volunteers, the work is often time consuming and difficult to complete.
Plans have been agreed that will bring all the changing and toilet facilities up to date. Provision will also be made for disabled access and facilities.
The plans also allow for an increase in the gymnasium area. Until that takes place we have little capacity to consider providing recreational activity.
The improved building will still be in keeping with its historic waterside position and will allow in particular:

  • The development of new partnerships in providing facilities for healthy exercise.
  • Better provision of indoor training for rowers at all levels and abilities.
  • Provision for indoor competition in fun events as well as local indoor championships
  • The opportunity to provide excellent facilities for training and for seminars
  • Full compliance with disabled facilities requirement

The key aims assume that the funding for this building work will be found. Without this development, many objectives will have to be delayed
