Leisure & Progression Group

The L&P group is a collection of rowers many of whom are retired, others have a non-standard work pattern that allows them to row with us in the morning. We have a mixture of experience, age and physical capability; we run a Learn to Row programme in the spring. The river in York can be quite challenging in the winter, so that’s why we wait for better weather for novices. If you can already row well (especially in a sculling boat), for instance if you are returning to rowing on retirement, then you should be able to join us at any time.We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 8:50 am to decide boats and crews; the earlier we arrive the more say we have in what happens. We row for around 90 minutes, clear up and then go for a coffee at the nearby Perky Peacock.

Almost all our rowing is done in sculling boats (1x, 2x, 4x-, 4x+), not sweep oar, as this gives us much more flexibility around crews. We don’t have any fixed crews on our normal rowing days. The social aspect of our group is really important too. The members regularly meet for post-session coffee and cake, informal get-togethers and even the occasional beer (or two) after a sunny summer outing. If you have any questions, especially if you are interested in joining us, please email the Leisure & Progression Group Coordinator at landp.ycrc@gmail.com.
